The world is an amazing place, with most of us only dipping our toes into discovering its beauty. As humans, we're curious by nature and love comparing various things, witnessing their changes and differences.
We decided to feed your curiosity with 50 interesting comparison images that will give you a completely different perspective on life. Are you ready? Cause some of these images are jaw-dropping.
They look like your average, loving young couple, right? Well, what people don't know is that the photo of this couple was only a couple of hours after they first met at Woodstock. For 50-years, the couple has been telling friends and family the romantic story of how they met, and the first photo is evidence of that.
However, the second photo is of the married couple 50 years later. Since that first photo was taken, they have never separated since.
Same boot, same pup
With puppies, we forget that they grow and turn into adult dogs. But many people make sure to catch those puppy-memories with cute photos of their pup. This one owner, who had a german-shepherd pup, place him in an old boot for an adorable photo-op.
However, the owner decided to take the same photo three years later to see the progress. Well, it looks like the boot hasn't changed a bit, but this pup is surely no longer a pup anymore!
These two photos are of the same men; the only difference is now they're old men. In the caption of this photo, it read, "my grandpa and his friend who was born across the street from him 2 hours after him. Navy picture around 1942/43 and when they turned 93 a couple of years ago. They swapped places in the second one."
Through all their years, they're still smiling together. If anything, this picture shows us there is such a thing as true friendship.
The world's largest fish
When looking at the world's largest fish, the Sunfish, we assume that they were of equal size at birth. It just makes sense. How can a tiny little fish grow up to be the world's biggest fish? That just ain't right! But to our surprise, the world's largest fish is actually the size of a pea when born.
Can you imagine? These little pea-size fishes grow up to be the largest fish in the sea. Who would have thought? It just goes to show you, don't just a baby fish by its size.
Mask vs. No Mask
We've all been wearing masks; however, most of us don't actually realize how effective they really are. So, one doctor decided to show the difference between wearing a mask and not wearing a mask.
Dr. Richard Davis sneezed, sang, talked, and coughed into a culture plate while wearing a mask and not wearing a mask. And the differences were pretty significant, as you can see in the comparing photos. In other words, maybe it's worth wearing a mask.
The stages of Alzheimer's
Though many of us know what Alzheimer's disease is, not many of us understand what actually happens to the brain. However, one woman decided to show the progression of Alzheimer's disease by documenting her mother's crocheting.
You see the beginning of the disease on the up left-handed corner, with the bottom center being the final crochet she made. The differences are significant, as the last crochet is barely visible. We can only imagine how she must have felt while documenting this.
Trash into fabric
More and more products are being made out of recycled plastic, at least, that's what we read. However, very few of us actually understand how products are made out of recycled plastic. But this photo shows a comparison and the process of how plastic goes from being in the bin to being turned into fabric.
The shirt in the photo is actually made from plastic. If you thought plastic couldn't be made into clothing and other items, well, think again.
Generations of hands
A picture can say a thousand words, and this photo says it all. In this picture, there are five generations of hands. What's even better is that in the caption, it says, "my daughter was born the same year my great-grandma turned 100."
It's lovely to see five generations of women together in one photo; their hands say it all. We can only imagine how proud her great-grandmother must be to see a new woman brought into the family.
The power of nature
When we see bare land, we don't really think of the possibilities it could look like. However, one couple decided to take the bare land around their house and plant as many trees and vegetation as possible. The result?
Well, the surrounding land has 293 plant species, 172 bird species, and 33 animal species, some of which were on the verge of extinction. What's even more interesting is that this project took around 18 years to complete. We'd say it was well worth the wait.
Tattoos can symbolize many things, and not all of them are nice. And while some people never grow out of their hate tattoos, some people do. However, how do you get rid of a tattoo? Are they supposed to be permanent? Luckily, laser removal and take away any unwanted tattoos.
This man decided to get rid of his hate tattoo and document the two-hour time progression. It was there on the top left-hand corner, and on the lower right-hand corner, it's completely gone.
The progress of a baby
When we see babies on an ultrasound, it can almost feel surreal. And after we give birth to a child, how do we know that the baby the doctor is giving us is actually our baby? There have been many stories of babies being switched at birth.
But in this photo, it looks like the mother knows that this baby is, in fact, her child. This is the progress of three weeks left inside to three weeks on the outside. They look like the same baby to me!
It's hard to think of our grandparents as children and young adults, but at one time, they were just like the rest of us. In this photo comparison, we see a young woman on a motorcycle with her dog. In the comparing photo, we see the same woman and the same motorcycle, only 71 years later.
What's even better is that she still has the same smile. But, there's something we need to ask...where did the dog go? We're not sure we want to know.
The Mud Maid
Sadly, this isn't a sculpture that was naturally formed in nature, but it is beautiful. The Mud Maid rests in Cornwall, Southwest of England. A local brother and sister duo, Pete and Sue Hill, sculpted the Mud Maid together. But the Mud Maid is a living sculpture, meaning that she changes with the seasons.
In Spring and Summer, she looks completely different than in Autumn and Winter, as you can see from the comparing photos. But whatever the season, she always remains resting.
The end of plastic
Do you ever think about what our shopping carts would look like without plastic bags? Most of us don't even realize how much packaging is used for our basic fruits and vegetables. This comparison shows the difference between a plastic and non-plastic filled shopping cart.
In New Zealand, they're trialing less plastic on their fruits and veggies, and this is the outcome. Hopefully, the entire nation catches on to this and finally ends the use of single-use plastic. Plastic is so last year.
Same whale, different year
Did you know that whales don't die of old age? Instead, they eventually get tired of swimming up for air and decide to drown themselves. That should brighten up your day! But this means that whales can live for an extremely long time.
Take this whale, for example. The first photo was taken in 1935 off the west coast of Mexico. Thirty-five years later, they photographed the same whale. It looks like it's enjoying a long and leisure life.
Men vs. Women's pockets
How many of us actually pay attention to our pockets? Not many. The pockets we're given are the pockets we have, but there's a huge difference between men's and women's pockets. In the picture below, they show how significant the difference actually is.
For men, they can fit an entire Switch into their pocket. But for women, they can only fit half of a switch Lite. What's up with that? Women want big pockets too! It's time to make equal pockets for all.
That's one big flag
When we see photos or see movies of older times, we don't really get to see the real perspective of just how large these ships were. In the photo below, it shows the flag flown on a Spanish ship at the Battle of Trafalgar. Do you know when that battle happened?
It was in 1805. Yes, that's right. They flew this giant flag on their ship back then. Now it really has you putting things into perspective of just how big that flag really is.
During this pandemic, most of the world was placed on standstill and forced to stay indoors. While the human world stopped, the natural world continued to live and even flourish while humans were gone. How do we know that? Well, take a look at this stem of bamboo, for example.
Without tourists touching the bamboo plants, a new shoot of bamboo was able to grow. It looks like the lack of tourists has let the natural world recover. Hopefully, it continues to grow.
What fossil is that?
When you first look at this fossil, you think it's of a giant tree stump, right? What else could it possibly be? Well, it's not a tree stump. This is actually the fossil of a turtle. This car-sized turtle once roamed around South America. Aren't you happy it doesn't exist anymore?
Though it probably didn't move too fast, so if you would have encountered it, you could easily escape. We're just amazed that a turtle of this size existed. Just look at how small they are today.
Same wedding dress, 60 years later
This is why you need to have your own wedding dress - for comparison photos! This couple, dare we say, looks even better in the current photo. This couple decided to give their wedding photos another go, sixty years later.
This baby blue wedding dress looking like something a woman would wear today - it looks like fashion does get recycled. They may be a little greyer, but they look more dashing than ever. We love this comparison photo.
If any of you have had braces, you know they're not fun. You get food stuck in them, they're painful, and you try your best not to smile in photos. This woman had braces for nine years and finally had them taken off.
The only thing was when she took them off; she couldn't stop smiling! We could imagine what she must felt like after taking them off. She probably felt like she was on cloud nine. The braces paid off because she looks absolutely beautiful.
Same, but different
You know the saying, like father, like son. This son tried to replicate the photo of his dad, and we think he did an amazing job. He really nailed everything down, even the exact facial expression. We don't know how, but he looks more like his dad than his dad.
Does that make sense? Of course, it does. This photo was taken 38 years apart, and yet, they look completely like they were taken on the same day.
The Oldest Door
When we think of old doors, we imagine the hinges broken off and being pretty useless when it comes to actually using it. However, the oldest door is still being used in Rome. It was cast in bronze for Emperor Hadrian around 115 AD.
In this photo, it's size is compared to a young woman - and trust us, from the looks of it, that's one big door. What surprised us is that they're still using it. Why would anyone want to actively use this door? It must be so heavy to open!
Now, this cat is certainly a special one. The cat, Domino, has a condition called Heterochromia, which is when a person or animal has a difference in eye color, either in the same eye or in two different eyes.
When Domino has the light reflecting on him, it causes his eyes to shine, making him look like the Terminator. The photo below shows the difference between Domino in normal daylight and Domino when light reflects off his eye. It looks creepy!
When a child loses a tooth, it's a big moment in life. They're finally growing up, taking on a more mature form. But in the photo, there isn't only a child's tooth. There's another tooth as well, and it's of a baby kitten.
The mother photographed her daughter's tooth and her kitten's tooth, and they both lost their teeth on the same day. How sweet is it that the little girl and kitten are literally growing up together at the same time?
Now, this is truly an interesting comparison photo. In the beginning, on the left, you see them as two young women. However, three-years-later, after transitioning, they're now who they feel they are.
What's even better is the caption that says: "what a difference three years make. But we're still the same homies." We love that they supported each other through those three years and made it through the process together as friends.
Moss vs. Hatchling
Is that a baby chick on the right? Wait, are you sure? How can that be? It looks just like moss! While most of us think that baby chicks are born yellow, it looks like these chicks have adapted to their environment. That way, they won't be so easy to spot from the air.
Either way, we have to admit, this is the cutest chick we've seen in a while. It looks so fuzzy and sweet; hopefully, no one mistakes it for moss, or else it'll be in trouble.
Same street, different season
Who thought a street could be transformed just with a couple of seasons? In Canada, a street can look completely different depending on the season you see it in. Take these two pictures, for example.
They're on the exact same street, just one photo is one the first day of winter, and the other is on the first day of summer. Would you have been able to tell it's the same street? Weather in Canada is surely something most other countries don't see.
Winter and summer coat
Did you know horses change their coat with the seasons? We didn't know that, but now we do. As the seasons change, so do the coats on horses. In this comparison photo, we get to see the same horse; however, with an entirely different coat.
If it wasn't for the white patches, we wouldn't have been able to tell they're the same horse. It looks so different from summer to winter. What a difference a couple of seasons can make.
Mother vs. Son
You know the old sayings, like mother, like daughter, and like father, like son. But what about mother and son? Well, this mother and son decided to compare themselves and see just how much they look alike. And honestly, they look like the same person to us.
If it wasn't for the hair, we wouldn't have really been able to see a difference. Wow, mom sure has strong genes! In this photo, the mother is 41-years-old, and her son is 17-years-old.
The Maine Coon
When it comes to domesticated cats, the Maine Coon is the largest breed. Not to mention, it's one of the oldest natural breeds in North America. But just how big and how fast do they grow?
This woman decided to take before and after photos to show the speed and size of her Maine Coon. The photo on the left is when the cat was 3 months old, while the photo on the right is when it's six months old.
First day of Kindergarten
Everyone has a picture of their first day of Kindergarten. It's a special day for a child and a sigh of relief for the parent. Finally! They're going to school! But this one teacher decided to do a comparison photo of her first day of kindergarten, thirty years apart.
How crazy is that! Now, she's the one leading the class, instead of being the student. It's neat to see how much people change throughout the years. Time certainly flies by!
The wise Eagle
Did you know bald eagles aren't born with a white head? In fact, it takes around five years for a bald eagle to actually form a white head. With its white head, this eagle looks wise and noble - a good look for this bird.
These photos are of the same bird taken years apart, showing the difference between juvenile and sub-adult plumage. The difference is outstanding; we love to see how animals develop throughout the years.
Day vs. Night
Do you know which city this is? We'll give you a couple of seconds to think about it before telling you. It's Barcelona, Spain! Maybe you've been there, and if so, you probably didn't see a bird's eye view of the city. Well, now's your chance.
This is what the city looks like, both day and night. Which one do you prefer? We have to say, we love nighttime Barcelona, but the daytime is what wins our hearts.
These two pictures are so adorable. One is taken in 2005, and the other in 2020. Can you tell which one is which? These photos are of two cousins. You see the difference in how big they've grown and the men they've become. They look adorable and have certainly gotten bigger since 2005.
We have to say; we love these family comparison photos; they warm our hearts. Do you have any family comparison photos? Maybe it's time you did one for yourself!
Is that a frog?
Now, we know that frogs are fairly small in size, but we didn't know they were that small. How is that frog even a frog; it's so tiny. Well, this Reddit user discovered this little guy while out in nature.
He decided to compare it with an American penny to show just how small this frog really is. And from what we can see, it's that this frog is, in fact, a very tiny one. Isn't he adorable? We think so!
The corpse flower
Oh, you know the corpse flower. We all know the corpse flower, even though most of us haven't seen this flower in person. The Amorphophallus Titanium, also known as the corpse flower, is well known for smelling like a corpse. But that's not the only thing it's known for.
It's also the largest plant in the world compared to the size of a human. And this picture shows just that. This flower only blooms once every forty years, and its bloom lasts only for four days.
The aging process
As humans, we're so focused on our own aging that we forget other animals also age as well. Of course, other animals get old, and you can see it on their bodies. Take this dog, for example.
Though it just looks like he had a good nap and woke up with bed head, this is actually a receding hairline. Yes, that's right. This dog had a natural mohawk, and these two photos show the change in it within six years.
Pre-birth vs. Post-birth
A woman's body goes through tremendous change when going through pregnancy. And it makes sense; they're carrying a human in their body. But few of us know that some women go through extreme bloating in their feet when pregnant.
This woman decided to document the differences. The photo on the left shows what her feet looked like during pregnancy, and the photo on the right shows what her feet look like two days after giving birth. What a difference!
When we say two people are identical twins, we mean they look exactly alike. But are identical twins really identical? Well, these two twins decided to see if they really were identical. They meshed two pictures of themselves together to see just how similar they really look.
And honestly, they basically look the exact same. Yes, there are small differences, but not enough to really notice. For all of us who aren't twins, having someone who looks identical to you is pretty crazy.
When we look at a whale, whether it's on tv or during a whale-watching exhibition, most of us struggle to understand just how big a whale is. Especially in comparison to humans. How big could a whale honestly be? Well, they're huge. No joke. Whales are gigantic.
In this photo, we get to see the comparison of a human next to the find of a whale. That's right; we're not even the same size as its fin. How crazy is that?
The final countdown
When we watch the American presidential elections, we expect it to be a show. There's yelling, drama, accusations - could you imagine the presidential debates being any other way? This person decided to count all the time each candidate interrupted each other during the presidential election.
Regardless of your political beliefs, it's interesting to see how many times each candidate interrupted their opponent - and the numbers are quite shocking. It looks like America needs to find a better way for candidates to debate each other.
Which brain is which?
We, humans, tend to have a high opinion of ourselves, but it looks like we're not the only animals with some brains. We just got lucky that we're able to use our brains alongside our bodies to build things.
However, there is one animal that shares a similar brain to us, and that's dolphins. On the left side is the human brain, and on the right, is a dolphin's brain. They're not that much different, right? How crazy is that?
Just because you're cousins doesn't mean you're going to look the same. And the same goes for other animals, including dogs. The Alaskan Malamute Phil and the Alaskan Klee Kai are cousins, and yet, their sizes are the complete opposite.
The Alaskan Malamute Phil is the large dog in the back, while the Alaskan Klee Kai is the tiny guy in the front. Though you can see the similarities in them, they completely different. But one thing is for sure; they're both cute!
Same city, different water
The Flint water crisis was something that was truly devastating, especially in our time. And it continues to be a public health crisis as thousands of children were exposed to high levels of lead. Organizations tried to illustrate just how bad the water was.
They took 4 bottles of water from 4 different houses, from all 4 sides of Flint, Michigan. These were the results. These differences are huge and also concerning as we all know what's behind those colors.
Snails aren't that slow
Snails are notoriously known for moving at the speed of...well, at the speed of snails. But you'd be surprised to know that snails aren't as slow as you think, especially when it comes to growing. In these two photos, you see the growth of a single snail.
How long do you think it took this snail to get to its final size? Well, shockingly, these two photos are taken one year from each other. One year! That's some serious growth if you ask me.
Do you know your sugar?
Though most of us know that sugar is almost in everything, do you know just how much sugar is in some of your favorite foods? Probably not. So this dentist decided to help illustrate how much sugar is in some popular drinks and foods.
It certainly puts into perspective just how much sugar we drink on a daily basis. If you're wondering why your kids are hyper after drinking a juice box, now you know why! It's the sugar!
At first glance, you wouldn't say that these rocks come from outer space, right? They look like rocks you would see while hiking or digging up the ground in your background. But, these two rocks actually came from space.
The two samples you see are meteorites but from different planets. One came from the moon, and the other came from mars. The black one is Martian, and the grey one is lunar. Look at how different they are! So cool!
Missing vs. found
A child going missing is everyone's worst nightmare. Law enforcement tries their best to find the missing child, but also try to look towards the future. If they don't find the child now, what will the child look like in five or ten years?
Forensic artists use age progression to estimate what the child will look like after going missing. These are the missing photos (left), the age progression photo (middle), and the found photos (right) of these once-missing children.
Pre and post baked Croissants
We all love eating baked goods, but not all of us know what baked goods look like before coming out of the oven ready to eat. However, this one professional baker decided to show people just how small a croissant is before being baked.
It's a nice comparison and shows us just how small croissants start out as. They're so tiny and sweet! Now all I can think about is eating a warm croissant. Oh god! What they have done - they've created a monster.
