35 Facts About Ozzy Osbourne, the Prince of Darkness

No matter what your favorite genre is, you know who Ozzy Osbourne is. You don't even have to hear a song of his; you know just how crazy this man can be. That's what happened when you're "the Godfather of Heavy Metal," after all.

But you may not know the small and wild details of his life and how he became one of the greatest musicians of all time. Well, it's about time you learned more about this legend and how he became who he is today.

His inspiration?

His inspiration to become a musician didn't come from a rock or metal band. It all started when he was 14-years-old and heard the Beatles. From there, his heart was sold on becoming a musician.

He said the song that laid out his future in music was the class " She Loves You." You have to admit, that's pretty sweet. It looks like he has a soft side to him that we didn't know about.

High school wasn't for him

Is high school really for anyone? Now that's what we should be asking ourselves. At 15-years-old, Ozzy dropped out of high school and started to work a series of random jobs to support himself. His parents must have loved this idea.

He had a long list of jobs, which included plumber, horn-turner, toolmaker, and laborer. Well, to be honest, he sounds pretty skilled to me. He's a jack of all trades. But this wouldn't last long as he pushed his way into the music world.

Selling yourself

Before joining Black Sabbath, Ozzy was in dire need of a job. But how do you find a job back then? Well, he kept things simple. He posted an ad inside a Birmingham music shop. The ad read, "Ozzy Zig Needs Gig—has own PA."

Well, that seems short, sweet, and to the point. The ad was a success as he was contacted by multiple bands to have him join as their frontman. Now that's how you sell yourself. Good for you, Ozzy!

Burning away money

If there's one thing you're about to learn is that Ozzy is kind of clumsy. He was once arrested after setting off fireworks in the hallway of a hotel he was staying at with his band, Black Sabbath.

They were on tour, and I guess Ozzy wanted to let loose. Well, this prank ended up costing the band $200,000 in fireworks. Wait. What? Just how many fireworks did he end up buying? He could have blown up the entire hallway!

Ozzy and drugs

Ozzy wasn't always a drug user, but his first experience happened when he was in a Denver hotel back in 1971. And what was the drug of choice? Cocaine. But how is he so sure that that was his first experience with cocaine?

He said, "you fall in love with cocaine, you remember when you started. It's like having your first f***." Okay, well, thanks for clearing that up with us, Ozzy. Now we know how he really feels.

Wasn't a ladies man

When we think of rock stars, we assume they have an abundance of women wanting to be with them, and they're sleeping around. But Ozzy wasn't popular with the ladies. In fact, the success of Black Sabbath was strictly from the male audience they gathered.

I guess women didn't like the whole "biting the head off of a dove" thing - it's not really a turn on. Of course, his success with women would eventually change as more women started to appreciate the band's music.

The Osbournes

Ozzy hadn't been in the spotlight for some time, but Sharon had an idea up her sleeve that she thought would be outstanding for the family. Sharon booked the family for a reality tv show called The Osbournes, where it would follow their day-to-day life.

For the first season, each family member was paid $200,000 per episode. And for the second season, they were paid $5 million in total. Not a bad paycheque for doing nothing, right?

The accidental text

We all like to assume that all celebrities know each other, but it's kind of true in this case. In an interview with Conan O'Brien, Osbourne admitted to accidentally texting someone about the fact he lost his cat. The person he texted ended up being Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin.

What a mistake we wish we all had made. How cool would it be to text Rhianna or Jimmy Fallon accidentally? We're pretty jealous of you, Ozzy!

Struggle with spelling

Ozzy really didn't have a good childhood because he was struggling with a learning disorder. Having a learning disorder isn't say to deal with as a young man. Osbourne spent most of his life dealing with dyslexia.

He says that his condition sadly prevents him from being unable to finish a book, and believes that his condition has contributed to his sporadic creativity that had defined his career.

You're fired!

In 1979, after ten years of being in Black Sabbath, the members of the band decided they needed to let Ozzy go. He was a difficult member, refusing to try out new ideas for songs.

Not to mention, his drug use was at an all-time high, and the band had to put off rehearsals as Ozzy would often be a no-show thanks to drugs and alcohol. After that, it was the final straw, and the band knew they would be better without him.

A downhill spiral

When he was fired from Black Sabbath, he didn't handle it too well. He spent three months in a hotel room, loading himself up on alcohol and drugs night after night. What made him stop?

Well, his wife Sharon played a huge role in saving his life when she coaxed him out of his hotel room and offered to represent his solo career. Once he saw the opportunity, things were looking a bit brighter for him.

Crime life wasn't for him

When Ozzy was a teenager, he was caught in an attempted burglary. Since it was his first crime, Ozzy managed to weasel himself out of the situation. He tried to steal clothes and re-sell them on the black market, but he ended up stealing baby clothes since it was too dark.

He also tried to steal a tv set but had to ditch it while he was fleeing from the crime. The good thing is he wasn't good at stealing, and it was for the best.

Lesson learned?

Ah, Ozzy. This guy just doesn't know his limits. After he was caught robbing the clothing store, he was sent to Winson Green Prison for six weeks as he was unable to pay his fine.

Even though his father could pay the fine, he refused to bail Ozzy out of prison. His father was determined to teach the wild guy a lesson. And based on how his life actually turned out, we think the lesson paid off, no? At least, financially, it did.

Name steal?

Now, this is a fishy one. In the late 1960s, before Black Sabbath was a thing, another ban named Coven contained a song in their first album titled "Black Sabbath." Not only that, their bassist's name was Geroge Osborne, also known as Oz Osborne.

Now, you can also see where the line gets blurred. Did Ozzy steal the band's name and his own nickname from Coven? People weren't too sure what to think when they discovered this out.

He also acted

For someone who was so camera shy, we wonder why he tried his chops at acting. Aside from showing up on reality tv, Osbourne would occasionally appear in films.

He plays the reverend in the 1986 comedy-horror Trick or Treat, and also plays the band's manager in The Jerky Boys. Not to mention, he also provided his voice for a role in Gnomeo & Juliet as well as the sequel. So, it looks like he's more talented than we thought.

He never watched his own show

As someone who's the lead singer of a famous rock band, you would assume that he would enjoy watching himself on the big screen. But in reality, it was the complete opposite.

Osbourne hated that type of attention on him. And even though he was on the reality tv show The Osbournes, he never watched himself on any of his shows. And what's even more amazing is that he kept to that promise till this very day.

The wax statue

Naturally, Ozzy, for his musical ambitions, deserves a wax statue in his honor. However, what most people don't know is that the statue of Ozzy comes with a twist. Most people know about the time when Ozzy urinated on the Alamo memorial, so this wax statue decided to commemorate that moment.

If you get too close to Ozyy's statue, it'll start peeing on you. Yes, that's right, it's an actually urinating statue all in Ozzy's honor. Now that's true art.

The light at the end of the tunnel

Ozzy was a man who loved to abuse drinking and drugs. Typically, people who are heavy into those substances don't live a long life. And for Ozzy, his life eventually was challenged on December 8th of 2003, but not from drugs or alcohol.

While he was riding his quad bike, he was in a serious accident. Osbourne broke his collarbone and eight ribs, but he also stopped breathing. His bodyguard, Sam Ruston, saved his life by resuscitating him.

A sweet romance

So how did the lovely couple meet? Well, Osbourne met his wife, Sharon, when she was working as a receptionist for her father, manager Don Arden. Black Sabbath was interested in having him as their manager, and he ended up signing with them.

But Osbourne was just happy to be able to come into the office on a regular basis and see Sharon. Though he liked her, he knew he had to keep things professional.

Kept things professional

Even though Osbourne and Sharon were extremely attracted to one another, they kept their feelings on the down-low. They managed to maintain a professional relationship until Osbourne left her father's management.

Sharon became Ozzy's manager with time and continued to manage him even after they got married in 1982. Now that's quite the unexpected and tame beginning to their love story. I thought it would have been more dramatic considering who she married!

Meeting the former first lady

Osbourne has fans from all different walks of life, all over the world, whether as a solo artist or while he was in Black Sabbath. But he has one fan that's certainly usual, and that's the former First Lady Barbara Bush.

President Geroge W. Bush, her son, while acknowledging Osbourne's presence at the White House Press Club, said, "Mom loves your stuff." Wait, for real? Or is this all just a big joke to Bush?

Man to man

When you're a celebrity, your home is a target. While Sharon and Ozzy were fast asleep in bed, someone broke into their home and began stealing Sharon's jewelry. Osbourne woke up to use the bathroom and saw the burglar, deciding to confront him. What was weird was that Ozzy was completely naked.

The burglar managed to escape, but the trauma he probably has from seeing a naked Ozzy Osbourne will forever haunt him. Hopefully, the thief changed careers.

Burn the house down

Being with Ozzy must have been a full-time job. He sounds like another child you need to take care of. Osbourne once almost burned down their home in Los Angeles.

But it wasn't because he was doing something wild; it was the complete opposite. He was trying to make a bacon sandwich. Yes, a bacon sandwich. Guess he wasn't too familiar with the stove since the single sandwich almost left him and his family homeless.

Not the best driver

Osbourne wasn't the best of drivers. He actually struggled to pass his driver's license test. He doesn't even remember how many times he failed it. On one occasion, he went to the doctor beforehand and was given Valium to calm his nerves.

Well, it worked perfectly, and he ended up falling asleep right in the middle of a three-point turn. We can only assume he didn't pass that time. At least, we hope he didn't pass.

Can't stop Ozzy

As you can imagine, Sharon wasn't a fan of Ozzy's reckless drinking and drug abuse. And by all means, she tried her best to stop him. Sharon once stole all of his clothes and took them to a hotel room so he would have nothing to wear to go to the pub.

However, like true Ozzy style, that didn't seem to bother him too much, and he went to the pub wearing one of Sharon's dresses. He's a man you need to keep up with.

Not a fan of performing

Though Ozzy was a man who spent over 40 years on stage and in the spotlight, he wasn't someone who loved it. In fact, Osbourne spent his entire career dealing with stage fright. Now it becomes more clear why he would wear extravagant costumes and behave eccentrically on stage.

He wasn't someone who enjoyed being seen by thousands of people. Who would have thought that? Not the best career choice for him.

He chose a certain day to get married

Osbourne may have been a wild man, but he wasn't a stupid one. When he married Sharon, he picked the perfect day for it to happen: The Fourth of July.

He wanted to make sure he would never forget their anniversary. This is probably for the best, as you can tell he didn't seem like the most reliable guy there was. That's what drugs and alcohol can do to you, folks!

A dead dove

In 1981, Osbourne made a deal with CBS Records to start his solo career after leaving Black Sabbath. When Osbourne went into the meeting, he had doves in his pockets that he was going to release once he signed the deal.

However, he was so drunk that he decided to bite on the dove's heads off and spit it onto the desk. Needless to say, CBS Records wasn't happy about the move and changed their minds on the deal.

A dead bat

As you can tell, Ozzy enjoys killing animals. After the dove controversy, he decided to take it one step further. In 1982, while performing in Iowa, he bit the head off of a bat after being thrown on stage by 17-year-old Mark Neal.

No one can confirm whether the bat was dead or alive before being bitten. Osbourne defended himself, saying he didn't think it was a real bat; he thought it was a rubber one. As a result, rumor has it, Osbourne had to undergo treatment for rabies.

Oh god, he did what?

Ozzy has a long list of crazy and wild things he's done in his past, and this is just another one to add to the list. In 1981, Osbourne was invited to a meeting in Germany with the head of CBS Records Europe. There at the meeting, he performed a striptease and jokingly kissed the record executive.

Sharon told him he was so drunk that he did a Nazi goose-step across the table, dipped his testicles into the executive's wine, and then peed into it. Well, that sounds like a great meeting!

A crowd-pleaser

Ozzy certainly knows how to become the talk of the town! Drummer of Mötley Crüe, Tommy Lee, loves to share this one particular story of Osbourne. It happened while Osbourne was touring with Mötley Crüe back in 1984.

While they were partying on their tour bus in Florida, Osbourne suddenly wanted to gross everyone out. So, he snorted a line of live ants right off of a popsicle stick. Well, that's one way to break the ice.

Another crowd-pleaser

If you've made it this far, then you probably know that Ozzy is not your average guy. Osbourne was really determined to one-up Mötley Crüe and wanted to be the trashiest rock star on earth. Lee shared a story on how Osbourne, without notice, pooped on Lee's hotel floor.

He allegedly then smeared his own poo on the walls. This is probably the grossest story I've heard about Ozzy, and honestly, the only people I feel bad for are the ones who had to clean it up!

He is his own tattoo artist

Would you expect anything less from Ozzy? I mean, he's been known to be a wild man, so this sounds pretty tame if you ask me. From all the tattoos he received throughout his life, the first one he got was on his knuckles on his left hand, which spells out the word "Ozzy."

What you probably didn't know is that he took a sewing needle and grate polish and did the tattoo himself. Yup! He is his own tattoo artist.

Once upon a time during a streak of boredom

I don't think many of us have ever done something this wild and weird before. If you have, please let us know how that turned out for you. According to Black Sabbath guitarist Tommy Iommi, in the 1970s, Ozzy was trying to entertain himself in the middle of a drug spree.

So he dragged the body of a shark into his hotel room, soaking the floor in blood. Wait, we have so many questions. How did he get the shark? Did he find it dead? What was he thinking?

His luck ran out

As you can probably assume, Ozzy's wild antics led him to suffer from multiple blackouts where he wouldn't be able to remember what he did. There was one time, in 1989, where he woke up in a prison cell, without any recollection of what happened. He urged a police officer to explain to him what happened that night.

It turned out he had tried to strangle his wife, Sharon. Ozzy said that he described it as "the most horrific feeling" when he talked about it years later.
